Technical skills - Green Screen

Technical Skills - Green Screen

For the filming of our initial music videos we were introduced to green screens.
Green screens are used in television, film and in other media circles. (Green Screen being used during filming for one of the instalments in 'The Avengers' franchise)

The screens are simply single coloured backgrounds that are removed in post - production via the process of chroma keying and replaced with an alternative background of choice.
These screens are often referred to as 'green screens' as green is the most common colour for them however blue screens are also used.

Q5 - To what extent have you used conventions from real media texts in your production work?

Q4 - How has your production work been shaped by post-prouction

How has your production been shaped by Post-production?

Post production is the final stage of production, it allows us to edit, cut and comprise all the material that has been planned and then captured in the production phase.

Q3 - In what ways has the research and planning processes helped you in constructing your production work?

In what ways has the research and planning processes helped you in constructing your production work?

Throughout the process of constructing our thrillers and in reflection it was apparent how vital research and planning were in order to produce a well prepared and quality production.

Research

As part of the research process we revised past and present thriller productions of different sub genres in order to trigger ideas regarding the way we would conduct our thriller, regarding elements such as iconograpy, aesthetic, sound and related thriller conventions.

Q1 - How have you used digital technology to complete your production work?

How have you used digital technology to complete your production work?

For our group's thriller we used a range of digital technologies including...

The I Macs and the programs on it
The Canon DSLR 650d Cameras
The Flip Camera

The Apple I Macs were useful as they contained programs such as 'Final Cut Pro' and 'Windows Movie Maker'. Windows Movie Maker was used to capture footage for processes such as podcasts before the thriller, in which we discussed strategies of how to conduct and the planning of the thriller narrative. Final Cut Pro was helpful in the post production phase of filming our thriller as it allowed us to edit and comprise all the footage we had captured in the production process from the Canon DSLR. Using Final Cut Pro we could enhance sound and stabilise shots by editing the focus in order to produce a clearer, more professional finished product.

The Canon DSLR camera was used primarily for the filming of the thriller but we became accustomed to them through our preliminary task. In the preliminary assignment we were introduced to the Canon's, we experimented with them during the short period of time we were given to produce our task.

Flip Camera's were used before the production of our thriller to film interviews with audiences as a means of audience research before conducting our thriller. They were useful to film interviews and quick projects as they are portable and content could simply be inserted via the usb, however they weren't suitable for our preliminary or thriller final pieces as the film quality was limited and not as clear or professional looking as other pieces of tech such as the Canon.

Music Video Preliminary Task

 Pre Production

For the task of our initial media music video we had to first decide upon a song in which add visuals to later on in the task. As we weren't certain on the choreography or the entire plan of what we wanted to shoot in the production phase audio selection became problematic. We couldn't agree on a song which became an issue as it shortened our time for production and ultimately post production.

How have you used digital technologies to complete your production work?

Canon DSLR

We used multiple of these cameras in order to achieve the best angles and pieces of footage possible in production. Towards the end of shooting i removed one of the cameras from its stand and began to shoot close-ups of the subject as he conducted his choreography in order to grab different dynamics to the end product when it would be completed.

Green Screen

Our group had to ensure the green screen background was setup before we shot our footage in order to have the opportunity to apply and artificial backdrop in post production.
